Barbados Currency,Tax and Duty
Currency
Both the Barbados dollar and USD dollar is accepted on the island. The Barbados Dollar is fixed against the US Dollar at $1 USD = $1.98 BDS.
All other currencies fluctuate against the Barbados Dollar.
Approximate rates of exchange are as follows;

Credit Cards are widely accepted on Barbados. Travelers Cheques in UK, US or Canadian funds are accepted in shops and Barbados hotels or alternatively can be changed at hotel reception's or any bank. Most banks ATM machines accept Credit Cards or Interac and dispense money in Barbados Dollars.
Tax
All prices include 15% VAT. Barbados hotels charge 7.5 % VAT usually on top of the rates quoted, plus 10 % service charge is often added. Always check at time of booking.
On many occasions in restaurants a 10% service charge will automatically be added to your bill. If not a 10%-15% tip should be applied to restaurant service.
Duty Free Shopping
All the major high street stores offer Duty Free Shopping. Merchandise is displayed showing both the local and duty free prices. To purchase Duty Free Goods, you must have your passport and airline ticket with you. The assistant will give you a second receipt which must be handed in at the airport on your departure. Certain items mainly alcohol will be taken directly to the airport for you to collect when leaving the island.
Duty Free Allowances*Entering Barbadods
All visitors are allowed to bring on to Barbados 1 litre of spirits or wine, 200 cigarettes or 100 cigars or 50 cigars and cigarettes not exceeding 230 grams in aggregate. Any items in excess of this allowance must be declared and are subject to the relevant duty and taxes.
Returning US Citizens (Applicable only if stay exceeds 48hrs)
Citizens are permitted to take goods duty free up to the value of $400 USD. Exemption is 10% on the next $1000, and then normal duty applies. In addition each person can mail back gifts to the value of $50 USD.
Duty free liquor is allowed at one liter per person over the age of 21.
Returning British Citizens
Each returning resident over 17 years of age may take goods up to the value of £28.00, 1 liter of spirits or wine, 200 cigarettes or 250 grams of tobacco, and 50 grams of perfume.
Returning Canadian Citizens (Applicable only if stay exceeds 48hrs)
Citizens are permitted to take goods duty free up to the value of $300 CAD, 40 ounces of alcoholic beverages, 50 cigars, 200 cigarettes, 2 lb. of tobacco, 24 12-oz cans/bottles of beer. Minimum age for alcoholic beverages varies with port of entry. In addition each person can mail back gifts to the value of $40 CAD.
